Unlimited cycling pleasure: Danube cycle path

Did you know that at 2.845 kilometers from the source of the Danube in Donaueschingen, the Danube is, next to the Volga, the longest river in Europe and touches ten countries? Not yet, then get in the saddle and start at the source, because the journey is the destination.

The Danube cycle path in Germany is just over 600 kilometers long and has been awarded 4 stars by the ADFC. Brigach and Breg originate in the Black Forest and “bring the Danube away”, as an old saying goes. The still small, young Danube forms gentle loops and high limestone cliffs line the valley. The varied landscape is exciting, dreamy and relaxing at the same time. From Ehingen you can decide whether you take the main route via Erbach or the secondary route via Blaubeuren to Ulm.

Past the Ulm Minster - the highest church tower in the world - and cities like Günzburg and Dillingen with impressive Baroque and Renaissance buildings, the Danube becomes ever wider. After the free imperial and trading cities of Donauwörth, Neuburg and Ingolstadt, the Danube fascinates with its rocky steep walls at the Danube Gorge near Kelheim. Continuing through the city of Regensburg, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its ensemble of old town and architectural monuments, you reach Passau, where the largest cathedral organ in the world sounds. After Passau you leave the German part of the Danube cycle path and can look forward to the Upper Austrian Danube valley. The Danube cycle path is still well signposted from Passau to Vienna and on to Bratislava. Get inspired here www.donauregion.at and just continue cycling along the Danube.

After Austria, the Danube flows through Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, the Republic Moldova and Ukraine before it flows into the Black Sea. With this impressive course, the Danube not only connects a wide variety of natural and cultural areas, but is also one of the oldest and most important trade routes in Europe.
