Hanseatic cities, lakeside cities, green cities, historic cities… Simply beautiful cities!
From the Hermannsdenkmal in the Teutoburg Forest to Xanten on the Lower Rhine, you pass a variety of different towns, each with its own charm. Detmold, in the shadow of the Hermann, offers an idyllic stay with its historic city center. The vibrant university town of Paderborn is a lively, yet manageable city that can be recognized from a distance by its Gothic cathedral. Lippstadt, also known as the “Venice of Westphalia”, is located in the heart of Westphalia and is all about water. The Lippe gives the city its name and, along with canals, fountains and water features, shapes the cityscape.
On the trail of the past
Once you arrive in the northern Ruh area, you can still find numerous relics of industrial culture. The glass elephant in Maximilienpark, once a coal washing facility for the Maximilian colliery, is now the landmark of the city of Hamm. But here too you can find idyllic old towns like in Haltern am See, located in the heart of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. In Xanten you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of the ancient Romans on the site of the former Roman town of Colonia Ulpia Traiana. Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum, the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten, invites you to visit here.
