Discover Roman culture on the Roman-Lippe route
The area between the Rhine and Elbe was to be brought under Roman rule at the time of Roman expansion. For this reason, the Romans set up numerous camps along the Lippe over 2000 years ago. At that time, three Roman legions marched upriver, but were defeated in the legendary Battle of Varus in the Teutoburg Forest. Today, traces of the Romans can still be found in many places along the Römer-Lippe route.
Embark on a journey through the past and immerse yourself in the Roman era right at the beginning of the route at the Hermannsdenkmal and the Lippe State Museum in Detmold. You can find the clearest traces of the Romans at the Anreppen Roman camp in Delbrück, in the RÖMERPARK Bergkamen, in the LWL Roman Museum in Haltern am See and in the LVR Archaeological Park in Xanten. The recently discovered Roman camp in Olfen and the shore fort in Lünen are also vividly shown to you through well-founded descriptions on the information boards.
On the “Roman Traces” loop you can also learn a lot about the everyday life of the Romans and the hard life of the legionnaires.
Go on a journey through time along the Roman Lippe Route, which will bring you closer to an important era in European history in an exciting way.
