On the Ruhrtal cycle path through the cultural and industrial landscape of the Ruhr area
The RuhrtalRadweg leads through the Hochsauerland and through the cultural and industrial landscape of the Ruhr area. Sights, monuments and original works of art provide exciting contrasts. This offers the opportunity to combine the bike tour with visits to museums, castles and industrial heritage. Mines, winding towers, gasometers and historic properties tell fascinating stories of the Ruhr area's industrial past.
Numerous places of cultural diversity
You can discover the “cradle of Ruhr mining” in the Nachtigall colliery in Witten, where “black gold” began to be mined 300 years ago. In the Henrichshütte in Hattingen you will learn everything about ore and coal mining as well as iron production in earlier times. Particular highlights are the show foundry, the regular night shifts and the changing exhibitions. You should make another stop on your bike tour at the UNE-SCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen. The Zollverein mine used to be one of the most modern and productive mines in the world. Today it is a place of cultural diversity with numerous art projects and events. The Villa Hill is also located in Essen. Located above Lake Baldeney, its historic living spaces, the extensive park and the historical exhibition provide an insight into the life of the industrialist Krupp family. At the end of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, another highlight awaits you in Duisburg: the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. Embedded in an impressive industrial culture, the park offers an extensive cultural and recreational offering with numerous events, climbing worlds and a diving paradise in the former gasometer.
